Even long after the violent deaths of several war veterans have been solved, the case continues to cast a long shadow over former special forces soldier Niels Oxen and his partner at the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET), Margrethe Franck.

Burdened by guilt over his role in the affair, Oxen has set off on a long-distance hike, while Franck has clashed with her superiors and been suspended.

When former PET chief Axel Mossman asks for their help, it seems like a welcome respite from the turmoil. The trio is tasked with assisting the tax authorities in a covert purchase of data stemming from a bank leak in Panama.

At the same time, Franck and Oxen try to help young police officer Sally Finnsen get to the bottom of the old case and track down the mysterious figure who killed her brother.

While Mossman behaves increasingly suspiciously, the Panama case brings shocking information to light and appears to intertwine with their hunt for the killer.
It becomes a fight for survival; for powerful, unseen forces, no price is too high when it comes to protecting a murderer…

Pilgrim is a standalone installment in the story of Niels Oxen, even though it takes its starting point in the series' fifth volume Gladiator. The book can be read independently of the titles in the completed Danehof Trilogy - De hængte hunde, De mørke mænd, and De frosne flammer - as well as the series' fourth and fifth volumes, Lupus and Gladiator.
